The main character, Ryougi Shiki, was involved in a car accident and fell into a deep coma for two years. When she finally awoke from it, she had gained the “Eyes of Death Perception” ability but believed to have lost something instead.
The Ryougi family attempted to create human beings that exceeded normal humans, and to accomplish this, they trained their children in various martial arts and fencing, and also made them split their personalities. They believed that by using this method, one personality could be an expert in one subject while the other could be a master of other subjects. Shiki was no exception to this, and she had a masculine and feminine side that switched places with each other.
After having woken up from the accident, Shiki believed that her masculine personality side had died during the accident. Instead she tried to supplement the spiritually dead Shiki's personality by her masculine tone.

Na samym początku warto zaznaczyć, że jest to kolejna produkcja od TYPE-MOON, chociaż tym razem jej pierwowzorem nie była gra jak w wypadku Fate/Stay Night, czy Tsukihime, ale seria light novels. Ponadto nie jest, to serial telewizyjny, a seria filmów. Ma być ich konkretnie siedem z czego trzy są już dostępne i trwają około godziny. Czwarty był emitowany w maju i na razie trzeba czekać na wydanie DVD. Piąty zapowiedziany jest na sierpień, a ostatnie dwa nie mają jeszcze chyba pewnej daty emisji.
Za animację odpowiedzialne jest studio ufotable i trzeba przyznać, że graficznie Kara no Kyokai prezentuje się bardzo dobrze. Szczególnie sceny akcji wywołują niezwykle pozytywne wrażenie. Z kolei za równie dobrą muzykę odpowiada Yaki Kajiura. Również endingi kończące każdy film są niezłe i z tych trzech, których miałem okazję usłyszeć do tej pory chyba najbardziej do gustu przypadł mi pierwszy. Obsada seiyuu, też prezentuje się bardzo dobrze, że wymienię chociażby nazwiska Maayi Sakamoto, która gra główną bohaterkę i Mamiko Noto, która pojawia się w trzecim filmie. Jeśli chodzi o grupy fansuberskie, to bardzo szybko kolejne filmy wydaje gg-TakaJun (w zasadzie zaraz po premierze DVD)
Trzeba przyznać, że dużą rolę odgrywa w tej produkcji klimat. Fanów Tsukihime może zainteresować fakt, że główna bohaterka Kara no Kyoukai ma podobne zdolności do Shikiego (i co zabawne również nazywa się Shiki). Warto jeszcze wspomnieć, że filmy są dość brutalne, do czego zresztą przyczyniają się zdolności postaci (np. oczy Shiki). Interesujący jest też fakt, że filmy te nie są wyświetlane w kolejności chronologicznej (chociaż z tego co mi wiadomo było tak również w oryginalnych light novels). Pierwszy nie jest więc początkiem całej historii, ale znajduje się gdzieś pośrodku (np. dopiero w trzecim dowiadujemy się, dlaczego Shiki ma sztuczną rękę, którą przecież widzimy już w pierwszym). Swoją drogą takie zabiegi są ostatnio dość popularne w anime (np. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, czy Rental Magica).
